about

The loss of Gandalf was huge for the fellowship. He was their wise leader and a friend. They surely must have felt that all hope was lost in the face of such an impossible quest.

Tolkien indeed experienced the horrors of war in the trenches of the first world war and this improvised piano ballad is meant to be a lament for all those who suffered in times of war. Sometimes, it is hard to make sense of loss, which is why deep hope so powerful.

Compositional notes:
This short piano piece was recorded in one single take many years ago. I have long forgotten why I felt so sad that day, and why I decided to hit the record button as I sat down to improvise this piano piece. I considered re-recording it or trying to polish it up or make it longer. But something of the raw beauty moves me each time I hear it, so I decided to leave it exactly as it was. I hope it touches you too as you listen.

lyrics

Darkness must pass, a new day will come' and when the sun shines' it will shine out the clearer
