about

Composition notes (Dave):
I think this song really captures a deep hope against all odds that myself, John and Dan experienced during the pandemic lock down.
The title is inspired by a famous essay that Tolkien wrote in defense of the transformative power of “Faerie Tales”. He said that in the face of impossible odds “it denies universal final defeat (...), giving a fleeting glimpse of Joy, Joy beyond the walls of the world (…)
He said in another letter "I coined the word 'eucatastrophe': the sudden happy turn in a story which pierces you with a joy that brings tears”

This song was mostly written by Dan. In order to convey the “Joy beyond” moment we decided to be brave in the recording studio and improvise this section with a crazy free time bass guitar and drum solo. I chose the magic sounding lydian scale and reacted to John and Dan’s improvisation to create an almost dreamlike moment in the song.

Listeners guide:
You are gliding over Middle-earth, leaving all your troubles behind. You have a vision of another realm and a glimpse of sense of “a joy beyond walls of this world”, that brings a deep hope beyond all understanding.
