about

Compositional notes (John):
In The Lord of The Rings we first hear the story of Beren and Luthien told by Aragorn as the hobbits sit around the fire on Weathertop with the threat of the dark riders ever present in their minds. Beren, a mortal man, falls in love with Luthien, an immortal elf, said to be the most beautiful of elves and men. To marry her Beren must descend into the darkest depths of the earth and steal a jewel from the evil creature Morgoth. Beren and Luthien fight side by side but Beren is mortally wounded. Luthien renounced her immortality rather than spend eternity without her one true love.

For Aragorn, it mirrors his own relationship with Arwen, who’s father Elrond has said he cannot marry unless he becomes King. It’s a tale that is at once sad, both Luthien and Arwen will die, and yet full of impossible chances and love conquering adversity. This mirrors Tolkien’s own experience; he was inspired to write the story when he saw his wife, Edith, dancing and singing in the woods after he returned from the horrors of The Somme.

The initial melody evokes Luthien, the beautiful elf-maiden dancing alone in the woods. The accompanying melody is Beren’s reply, his love and his pain at his own sorrow at her unattainability. These two themes grow in intensity as the pair’s relationship takes them into battle with Morgoth and finally leaves them together, with Beren mortaly wounded and Luthien choosing death over immortality for Beren’s sake.

Listener’s guide
You are Beren as he stumbles across the beautiful elf-maiden, Luthien, in the woods. Together you travel to the depths to steal the Silmaril from Morgoth. Finally, you are Luthien choosing love over imortality.
